NAGPUR: The Union Ministry for Human Resources Development (HRD) has named six universities from India as ‘Institutes of Excellence’ with an aim to enable them to compete with world-class universities. Of the six institutions, three are government-run universities while three are from the private sector.
Though a number of institutions has applied for the coveted title, experts have selected only six of them. They include government-run IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IISC Bengaluru. The three private sector institutions include Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Bits Pilani and Jio Institute. These six institutions will now be known as ‘Institute of Excellence’.

After this recognition, these six universities will become autonomous and will have the right to start new courses, to invite foreign faculties and to tie-up with foreign institutions. These six institutions will also be able to decide their own academic and research programs, for which they had to earlier get permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
