Senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat died on Wednesday. He was 63 years old.

Kamat’s death, as said by many on social media, has left a void in Mumbai’s political scene. A two-time Lok Sabha MP, Kamat is renowned for his mass appeal and political acumen. A number of people on Wednesday took to social media to pay their respects
An advocate by profession, Kamat was a commerce graduate from RA Podar College, Mumbai and has a law degree from the Government Law College, Mumbai.He was a Member of the Parliament for the Mumbai North West constituency of Maharashtra in 2009 and Mumbai North East constituency of Maharashtra in 1984, 1991, 1998 and 2004.
He served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs with additional charge of Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India during 2009 to 2011.In July 2011, he resigned as minister. In 2013, Kamat was appointed General Secretary All India Congress Committee and given charge of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and was also appointed as a member of the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the Indian National Congress.
In June 2016, Kamat resigned from all Congress positions.
Kamat in a message to his supporters said he felt it was time for him to take a backseat to enable others to get an opportunity. “Dear friends, over the last 44 years, I have worked with most of you and served the Congress. For several months now, I have felt I need to take a backseat to enable others to get an opportunity,” he said.
“I met Congress president about 10 days ago and expressed my desire to resign. Subsequently, I sent letters to both Soniaji and Rahulji, saying that I would like to exit. Since there was no reply, I have formally informed that I would like to retire from politics,” he added.
