Here are some causes of bad breath that may surprise you.

Skipping Breakfast

Breakfast is not only good for your stomach but also for your mouth. The morning meal helps to increase the production of saliva in the mouth and clears your tongue of stink-causing bacteria.

Liver Problems

Liver problems like fatty liver syndrome or jaundice can also make your mouth stink. The liver is responsible for fat metabolism and when it not able to do that, the amount of bacteria in the mouth increases.

Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers are lesions in the oral cavity that turn into sores. There might also be bleeding or pus in them. They often lead to mouth odour due to pus formation and infection.

Bleeding Gums

If you have bleeding gums then the blood sometimes accumulates in the mouth and goes stale. The stale blood gives your mouth a dirty stink.

Throat Infection

When you have throat infection then the bacteria sometimes breaks down the cells of the bronchial tract and produce foul smelling mucus.

Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is one of the prime medical reasons for bad breath. It makes your mouth smell like stale fish.

Diet

If you have a diet rich in proteins, you will be more prone to bad breath. This is because amino acids act as breeding grounds for mouth bacteria.

Drinking Alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol dries up your salivary glands. The saliva usually acts as a medium for washing away the odour causing bacteria in the mouth. In absence of sufficient saliva, you can face bad breath.

Sleep Apnea

People who have sleep apnea cannot breathe through their nose while lying flat. So they have to breathe through their mouth. That is why, the air dries up the saliva in the mouth and causes odour.

Medicines

Some medications dry up the mouth. Antidepressants, painkillers and even diuretics dry up your mouth. In the absence of saliva, mouth odour increases.
