Chain-snatching terror on Nagpur streets continues to haunt the womenfolk on all 7 days of week, 30 days of month and 365 days of year. Women continue to be the victims on the same number of days specifically in the posh localities of Orange City as they are easy preys and ‘heavy’ with the jewellery. In between, Nagpur Police continue to prove their inefficiency in dealing with the crime taking place in bright sunny days and brightly illuminated nights as well.
In the instant case, a woman was relieved of her gold chain and ‘Mangalsutra’ collectively worth Rs 31,000 on Wednesday late night under the jurisdiction of Dhantoli police station. According to police, Madhuri Suryakant Meghe (38), a resident of Plot No. 198, Uma Kalam Apartment, Pande Layout, was riding pillion with her son on his motorcycle (MH 31 BD 9607) at about 10.50 pm on Wednesday. The duo was heading home after attending Mahalaxmi Puja at Koradi Mandir. When both reached in front of Hitavada office, a very busy spot in posh Dhantoli area, two unidentified criminals, riding a motorcycle, snatched Madhuri’s gold chain and ‘Mangalsutra’ collectively worth Rs 31,000. Before she could raise an alarm, the goons speeded away from the spot.

On the basis of Madhuri’s complaint, Dhantoli police have registered an offence under Sections 392 and 34 of the IPC and are searching for the chain-snatchers.
However, this is not an isolated incident of chain-snatching in a posh area like Dhantoli. The terror of chain-snatchings has gripped the Second Capital City of Nagpur and no locality has been left untouched by the chain-snatchers. The girls and women have become so scary, they shudder or think twice before coming out of their houses with “Mangalsutra” or gold chains. Dozens of chain-snatching incidents (Reported and unreported) have been taking place as a routine and so are dozens of questions being raised over efficiency or senseless attitude of Nagpur police. An isolated arrest of a chain-snatcher does not point out alertness of police.
