Nagpur : Following up support to the nationwide drive “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan”, IGNOU has been organizing various programmes through its students. A similar such cleanliness drive was recently conducted in Nagpur Central jail which was carried out by none other than the inmates who are pursuing various academic programmes from Nagpur Regional Centre of IGNOU.
Initially the drive was carried out in Women’s cell. Senior Jailor Vaibhav Atram said the IGNOU initiative is remarkable in breaking the isolation of these prisoners.
IGNOU Regional Director, Dr. P. Sivaswaroop, appreciated the registered IGNOU students and explained them about the Swachh Bharat Mission and asked them to be part of the National Mission by keeping their surroundings clean. Study material were also distributed to the registered students. Six female inmates took admission in BPP and MA for the present Academic Session also.
The Second part of the programme was held for male prisoners. Senior Jailor Atram in said that education is very important in life and the prisoners should use this jail time for good work i.e. in studying. He said that if they receive degree while in jail, when they are released from prison their family members will be proud of their achievement, achieved while in prison.
Dr.Sivaswaroop said that whatever happened in their life should be kept aside and they should work positively for their future. IGNOU is providing free education to them so that they can effectively use time and become Graduate/Post Graduates. He explained them the concept of Swachh Bharat and asked them to maintain personal hygiene and surrounding cleanliness.
Later the inmates cleaned the jail campus. Sanjiv Hatwade, Teacher (Male Prisoners), R. K. Motke, Teacher (Women’s Cell) and Chaya Patil, Jailor (Women’s Cell) also participated in the activities.
