Nagpur: A delegation of Nagpur unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) met Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B and demanded reconstruction of over 100 year old railway bridge at Ajni, restoration of bus services from Congress Nagar T-Point to Rahate Colony after the new bridge is constructed and the construction of new roads on both sides without demolishing the flyover in front of Nagpur Railway Station. The AAP delegation was led by Vidarbha President Dr. Devendra Wankhade.

The AAP said that this bridge is on the 125 to 150 years old railway line connecting South and South-West Nagpur and 1/3 of it is said to be 150 years ago when the railway started, while 2/3 is said to be after 1927. This bridge is in bad condition and some part of this bridge is very dilapidated and at some places the ground is visible from the top. Heavy traffic has been stopped by erecting poles on this bridge. Also, the pedestrian roads on both sides of the bridge have also been closed. On the whole, the administration is not aware that this bridge can become a cause of serious accidents at any time, the party said.

“On the other hand, cement roads are being constructed unnecessarily in many places in the city. The process of demolishing the bridge in front of the Railway Station which was built 12-13 years ago is a waste of natural resources and misuse of public money. But where the bridge is known to have reached the end of its life span, no responsible organization or public representative is paying attention to reports of bridge weakness, which could lead to catastrophic accidents,” the AAP delegation stated.

The party further said that Ajni Bridge is very important for citizens, it takes an hour to cross the bridge because of the traffic jam every morning and evening. Similarly, on the other side, there is a medical college and a super specialty hospital. Ambulances get stuck in the crowd several times a day on this bridge, delaying the treatment of patients. Every day, many cars and bikes hit the poles on the bridge and the vehicles are damaged. Due to the end of life span of the bridge, if the bridge collapses, there can be a huge loss of life due to the heavy traffic on the bridge, as the railway traffic is constantly running under the bridge.

There is an urgent need to construct an alternative bridge at Ajni. A new bridge is not being built saying that there is no funds but on the other hand the plan to spend Rs 300 crore to build a simple 800 meter road by demolishing the flyover built 12 years ago in front of Railway Station is a total waste of public money.

The construction of a new bridge should be started immediately on the side of the existing bridge, and the new road fund of Rs 300 crore should be used for another bridge. The proposal to demolish the flyover in front of the railway station should be cancelled and a new four-lane road should be constructed along that bridge. A road should be constructed on the left side of the flyover for the Tekdi Ganesh Temple, the AAP delegation demanded..

Other members of the AAP delegation included Maharashtra Treasurer Jagjit Singh, Maharashtra IT Cell Head Ashok Mishra, Ajay Dharme, Santosh Vaidya, Shirish Tidke, Nilay Gadekar, Rishikesh Nagause, Sushma Kalamkar, Praveen Talha, Rajesh Tamgadge, Rahul Bhajipale and Kundan Kanphade, said a press release issued by Bhushan Dhakulkar, Nagpur City Secretary and Vidarbha Media chief.
