Nagpur: After a four-month long hunt, the Crime Branch Unit-5 of Nagpur Police on Wednesday arrested another suspect in connection with the brutal murder of Ola cab driver Yash Vishnu Gonekar in the Yashodhara Nagar area of the city in May this year.

The suspect, identified as Sheikh Aslam Sheikh Maqsood (27), a resident of MHADA Colony, Kapil Nagar, was apprehended near Fardeen Celebration Hall in Yashodhara Nagar following a tip-off.

Gonekar, who had a criminal history with around 10 cases registered against him, including attempted murder, assault, and theft, was murdered on May 17 this year. The crime was the result of a long-standing rivalry between the victim and two other accused, Sheikh Arbaz Sheikh Iqbal (23) and Aslam alias Guddu Maqsood Ansari (21), both from the same colony. The conflict reportedly began when Yash had a violent altercation with Arbaj’s younger brother, leading Arbaz and Aslam to seek revenge.

On the night of May 17, around 12.30 am, Yash was intercepted near a celebration hall in Majri while returning home in his cab. The accused brutally stabbed him multiple times with sharp-edged weapons and fled the scene. A passer-by discovered Yash in a pool of blood and informed the police, who rushed him to Mayo Hospital. Later, he was transferred to Government Medical College & Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries after a few hours of treatment.

While Arbaz was arrested soon after the incident, Sheikh Aslam had been evading police until his capture on Wednesday. He has now been handed over to the Yashodhara Nagar Police for further investigation.
