After HC rap, NMC bulldozes illegal constructions at two hospitals in city

Nagpur: Pushed into action after a rap by Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started an anti-encroachment drive against hospitals in Ramdaspeth and Dhantoli.

During the drive, the anti-encroachment squad of Dharampeth Zone razed illegal construction on ground floor at KRIMS Hospital, Central Bazaar Road, Ramdaspeth, and later at Golhar Hospital. At KRIMS, excess construction on 205.94 sq.mtrs of land was found which was meant to be kept open for parking.

Meanwhile at Golhar Hospital, located on East High Court Road, about 95.69 sq.mtrs of extra construction was demolished by the NMC squad. The hospital’s waiting lounge, a medical department, and other units were constructed in violation of rules. The High Court, during a recent hearing, had pulled up NMC officials for its inaction. The commercial usage of the area meant that it was to be kept open and had aggravated parking issues in the Central Business District of the city.

The violation continued to be ignored by successive bosses of NMC even as citizens suffered. On Sunday, the NMC team carried out demolition of the walls at the ground floor of the multi speciality hospital. Earlier notice was issued on April 1 u/s 53 (1) of Maharashtra Regional Planning and Urban Development Rules 1966. The notice to Golhar Hospital was served on April 15, 2024, and thereafter on Sunday demolition action was undertaken.

Every other hospital in Ramdaspeth and Dhantoli area has diverted the parking area to commercial usage as NMC officials looked the other way on the encroachment. Even though the anti-encroachment drive has been undertaken against select hospitals, the bigwigs continue to operate with violations and diversion of parking because of political patronage and support.
