Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court on Tuesday issued summons against the accused in defamation case filed by Jay Shah against online news portal The Wire.
Junior Shah had filed a defamation case against seven people over reported huge growth in his firm’s turnover published by the website on 9 October.
Two days later, Shah’s lawyers had failed to turn in the court, where he had filed a criminal defamation case seeking damages worth Rs 100 crore against the website.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate S.K. Gadhvi had ordered inquiry by the court after Jay Shah filed the case.
This was after the website carried a report alleging that the turnover of his company had soared by 16,000 times since Narendra Modi became the prime minister and his father was elevated to the post of BJP’s president.
According to the report, the balance sheets and annual reports obtained from the RoC had revealed that in the financial years ending March 2013 and 2014, Shah’s Temple Enterprise Private Ltd. engaged in negligible activity and recorded losses of Rs 6,230 and Rs 1,724 respectively. In 2014-15, it showed a profit of Rs 18,728 on revenues of only Rs 50,000 before jumping to a turnover of Rs 80.5 crore in 2015-16.
