AIADMK likely to stake claim for Vice President’s post

07jaya1-1The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is likely to push the National Democratic Alliance government to make party leader M Thambidurai, who is currently deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Vice President of India.

Senior party leaders have written to AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa with the suggestion to nominate Thambidurai for the post.

Thambidurai is a fifth-time Lok Sabha MP and has been deputy speaker of the House twice. He is, therefore, sound in conducting the proceedings of the House.

The AIADMK has 37 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 11 in the Rajya Sabha. This is another reason why Jayalalithaa may also be keen to stake a claim.

Vice President Hamid Ansari is retiring in August 2017.

Though almost a year is left for his retirement, the AIADMK has started lobbying for the post in New Delhi.

The issue might come up for a discussion in the next meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jayalaltiha.
