Amazon India, Meesho, Snapdeal, and Other E-Commerce Giants Remove Glue Traps to Catch Rodents After PETA India’s Push

Mumbai – Following an appeal from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, online retailers Amazon India, Meesho, Flipkart, Snapdeal, and JioMart have removed and blocked listings for glue traps – trays coated with a sticky adhesive that ensnares small animals, who can suffer for days before dying – from their platforms. The move comes after 32 states and union territories across India banned the use, sale, and manufacture of glue traps in response to PETA India’s efforts.

“Animals caught in glue traps face hideously slow and agonising deaths as they scream, panic, and rip their own skin off in a desperate attempt to survive,” says PETA India Chief Corporate Liaison Ashima Kukreja. “PETA India commends these retailers for protecting wildlife from these vile devices and calls on all others to follow their lead.”

Reliance Retail’s e-commerce platform, JioMart, has stopped listing glue traps for sale, and PETA India has been informed that its offline retail chain – with over 16,000 stores across the country – is in the process of ending sales of glue traps.

Wildlife – including birds, snakes, mice, rats, and squirrels – who get stuck in the glue struggle desperately to escape, sometimes chewing off their own limbs before succumbing to shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, or blood loss. Glue traps are also largely ineffective, because they neglect to address the source of the problem: as long as food remains accessible, more animals will move in to take the place of those who have been killed.

PETA India is now urging BigBasket and IndiaMART to follow the lead of these other retailers by ending their sale and advertisement of glue traps and encourages the public to urge any other retailers to stop carrying the cruel products as well.

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
