Ambazari Lake overflows as rain continues to batter city

Nagpur: The Second Capital City of Nagpur finally witnessed the enchanting sight of Ambazari Lake overflowing. The incessant rain yesterday (Sunday) night battered the city causing the overflow. On the other hand, the nagging problem of water-logging at Narendra Nagar railway under bridge connecting South-West Nagpur persisted. Several vehicles were trapped in deep water forcing authorities to divert traffic.

The Met office has predicted heavy rains in Nagpur as well as entire Vidarbha in the coming days. The district administrations in Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gondia, Yavatmal, Bhandara, Amravati districts have sounded alert.

As Ambazari Lake started overflowing, enthusiastic people, young boys and girls, swarmed the spot to enjoy the phenomenon. Many were seen clicking selfies with cascading, white water. The administration has deployed security guards to avert untoward incident. Disregarding the security guards, mobs of youngsters enjoyed splashing in the overflowing water. The overflow point of the lake has turned out to be a latest picnic spot.

The repeat of Friday havoc is leaving citizens uneasy. The city saw massive rains close to 300 mm in 24 hours resulting in flood like situation in the city. With the weatherman predicting heavy rains during next 48 hours, the district administration has put the Disaster Management Force, Fire Brigade on alert.

While the incessant rain has been battering the region since the past few days, a very heavy spell of rain within a short time on Friday led to huge flooding of entire Nagpur city, kind of which had never been seen in the recent past. The city witnessed huge traffic jams at many places and massive gushing of water at several market areas leaving hundreds of people trapped where they are. Almost all city reservoirs have crossed their overflow marks.
