Noted Film star Aamir Khan, known not just for his unusual movies based on current themes but also as host of TV show “Satyamev Jayate” has joined his voice to the chorus against growing intolerance ( to minorities and liberal thinkers) in the country.
He expressed his feelings to Indian Express Director Anant Goenka at the 8th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism awards where Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister was the chief guest.
Aamir said a sense of “insecurity” and “fear” had seeped down within society, even his family. He disclosed that his wife Kiran had asked him ” should we move out of India?” Kiran, Aamir’s second wife after he divorced his first wife Reena ( also a Hindu like Kiran) has had a son through in vitro fertilization and surrogacy who must be 3- 4 years old now. She is reported to have said she fears for her son and the kind of atmosphere he would grow up in.
“Kiran fears the atmosphere around us. She is afraid to open the newspaper every morning. That does indicate there is a sense of growing disquiet” Khan said.
Asked for his views on writers, artists, historians etc. returning their awards Aamir said that was their way of getting their point across.
He said he would endorse any protest that is non violent. He also said the protests were prompted by a growing atmosphere of intolerance around the creative community and the growing sense of insecurity over it.
Khan’s openly airing his views has had the one man army of pro Modi Cinestar Anupam Kher castigating him.
“From incredible India to intolerant India in 9 months? How is that possible Aamir?” He has asked in a taunt to Aamir who was part of the Incredible India campaign.
