Nagpur: Marking a significant step toward making the electoral process inclusive and accessible, Vasant Dhomne, a resident of Diamond Nagar in East Nagpur constituency, on Sunday became the first person in Nagpur district to cast his vote from home under the facility introduced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for voters above 85 years and those with over 40 percent disability.

The Nagpur district administration would be visiting 2,360 eligible voters in Nagpur and Ramtek Lok Sabha constituencies from April 14 to 17 enabling them to participate in the electoral process through postal ballots from the comfort of their homes.

In Nagpur constituency, 1,341 voters, including 1,204 senior citizens above 85 years and 137 disabled individuals, have opted for home voting. In Ramtek, total 1,019 voters including 889 voters above 85 years and 130 disabled individuals have preferred to vote from home.

The ECI has established 160 teams for Nagpur and 105 teams for Ramtek seats to oversee the process.

Nagpur District Collector Vipin Itankar told the media that by accommodating the needs of vulnerable populations, election authorities strive to ensure equitable participation in the democratic process. “Home voting serves as an accessible alternative for individuals facing mobility challenges or advanced age. It ensures that every eligible voter can participate in the electoral process, aligning with democratic principles of inclusivity and representation,” he said.

Recently, the district election officials held a meeting at the Collectorate with candidates and their representatives to apprise them of the home voting process. “It is an effort to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the process and can provide support when needed,” said officials.

At the meeting, Itankar emphasised the importance of safeguarding the privacy of voters during home voting to uphold the integrity and fairness of the electoral system. The entire home voting process is being videographed by a team comprising a camera person, two polling officers/staff and micro observers. Representatives of the candidates too have been given the option of accompanying the team.
