Azadika Amrit Mohotsav: Placemaking 2.0, pedestrian friendly Mahal streets kick off in Nagpur

Nagpur: Nagpur Smart and Sustainable city Development Corporation Limited has kick started Placemaking part 2.0 campaign at Mahalstreet under Azadika Amrit Mohotsav. This event marks a trial, an attempt to pedestrianized and regulate the markets under the initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Smart Cities Mission initiative.

NSSCDCL intends to conduct and monitor the intervention on temporary basis, using tactical urbanism as a tool, to understand the perspective of the local stakeholders, behavior and challenges before any permanent intervention.

Various interesting events had conducted in the 75 hours while the old Mahal Street changes its character form vehicle oriented and unorganized market to a pedestrian oriented and well-organized market.

Several activities were also held during the placemaking event, including Urban Sketching with the Urban Sketchers Nagpur group, which documented Nagpur and heritage through sketches and a heritage walk with Mayor of Nagpur Dayashankar Tiwari,Chief Executive Officer of Nagpur Smart City Buveneswari S., and other city officials.

A cyber-crime awareness campaign, a kid helpline number, and a road safety campaign were all organized. Pedestrians, shoppers, and children played various games such as khokho,badminton, and gully cricket on the street throughout the day.

This is an attempt by NSSCDCL towards reclaiming spaces from vehicles and giving it back to people. NSSCDCL has collaborated with THE HABITAT Architecture Urban design Interiors Studio Nagpur, Another Earthling Studio, Urban Sketchers and ESAF foundation Nagpur.

For a week NSSCDCL is gathering the design inputs from the users on the trial interventions. NSSCDCL has also conducted stakeholder engagements on site to understand the perspective of the local shopkeepers, restaurant owners, small business owners and residents.

Local stakeholders mentioned that they are happy with the trials and look forward to permanently restrict vehicular movement in the area of intervention.Under placemaking 2.0 Nagpur Smart city activated the Smart parking area at
Ramdaspeth by installing the Variable Message Sign Boards to display the Covid and other environmental awareness messages.
