Nagpur: A Dhaka-bound Ethiopian flight ET680 had to make an unscheduled landing at Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport at 4.10 am on Monday. On the way to Dhaka, the flight captain got a message about poor visibility at the destination airport. As the aircraft was in Nagpur airspace, the captain contacted Nagpur ATC and sought permission to land at the city airport.
After getting necessary permission from the ATC, the flight made an unscheduled landing at the airport. After the aircraft landed at the airport, the officials of MIHAN India Limited took care of the passengers.
According to officials, the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 680 was heading towards Bangladesh capital Dhaka from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The flight, which departed from Addis Ababa, was scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Sunday. However, after hovering for some time in the sky due to poor visibility, the aircraft was diverted and landed at Nagpur around 4.30 am.
The flight carried 17 passengers, who were later accommodated at a local hotel. After a delay of over 16 hours, the aircraft resumed its journey and departed for Dhaka at 9.30pm on Monday.
The flight could not take off during the daytime due to ongoing recarpeting work of the runway at Nagpur Airport. It may be mentioned that in 2021 also, a Dhaka-bound Ethiopian flight had to make an unscheduled landing at the city airport but for a different reason.
In a similar incident, an Indigo flight, 6E 2788, from Delhi to Kolkata, also faced challenges due to poor weather conditions. The flight, which took off from Delhi at 2.30 am on Sunday, was expected to reach Kolkata by 4.30am. However, it was diverted to Nagpur, due to poor visibility. Following a delay of approximately two hours, the flight resumed its journey and reached Kolkata at 6.30am.
