Nagpur: In a major action, Jaripatka police on Monday seized banned gutkha and scented tobacco products worth Rs 8.85 lakh being smuggled into the city in a milk van from neighbouring Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. Cops also seized a Tata 710 truck (MH-40/CD-2689) worth Rs 15 lakh and took its driver into custody.
Acting on a tip off, the DB Squad of Jaripatka Police, under the supervision of Senior Inspector Vaibhav Jadhav, intercepted the vehicle on Sunday night. During the vehicle search, cops found 25 bags containing banned tobacco. After seizing the banned tobacco products, police informed the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and took the driver into custody.
According to police, the bags containing the banned stuff were being illegally transported by accused Farooq from Chhindwara to Vijay Traders’ shop owned by Vijay Jethani, resident of Jaripatka.
Based on a complaint lodged by Raviraj Bhojraj Dhabarde (40), Food Safety Officer, FDA, cops registered a case under Sections 188, 273, 328 of the IPC read with Sections 26(2)(PA), 27(3), 30(2)(A), 59 of Food Safety and Standards Act and launched detailed investigation.
The action was undertaken by Senior PI Vaibhav Jadhav, PI (Crime) Trupti Sonawane, PSI Navnath Devkate, ASI Wahab Desai and other personnel including Roshan Tiwari, Manish Kokurde, Vishal Nagbhide, Sanjay Pawar under the guidance of DCP Zone 5 Manish Kalvaniya and ACP Roshan Pandit.
