Nagpur: Even though Nagpurians heaved a sigh of relief as all Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in the wake of negligible cases, they are now fighting a battle on a different front! The raging Mosquito Menace!! The ordeal repeats every year. But the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Health Department has miserably failed in preventing invasion of mosquitoes in swarms. Like every year, NMC this year will wake up when the damage has already been done in the shape of spurt in Dengue, Malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
People in some areas of the city are suffering the maximum itchy brunt. Of course, no part of the city is immune to the menace. Almost the entire city is suffering in itchy misery. The buzzing music turns intense at nightfall forcing people to spend sleepless nights irrespective of repelling measures. Daytime is no different. Hospitals and clinics too have been swarmed, not by mosquitoes but by patients with different fevers. Virtually no place has been left infested by the disease-breeding species turning the scenario grim.

Several localities in Nagpur are in the vice-like grip of the buzzing tiny insect. The deadly species can be found in almost all nooks and corners of the city leaving the citizens in itching misery. “All this could be avoided if the NMC carries out mosquito eradication activities promptly,” said a resident.
Residents from almost all localities pointed out there were many large open plots in their areas having filth and puddles that facilitate breeding of mosquitoes. They had taken up the issue with the civic authorities on several occasions. Neither the Health Department officials nor the zone officials turned up to address the issue, they lamented.
With this awful situation, the risk of getting infected with dreaded diseases – malaria, dengue, chikungunya – has increased manifold and the hapless citizens are looking to Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Health Department of State Government for relief. Demand for use of fogging machines is being voiced by citizens from many areas.
