Nagpur: Former State Energy Minister and BJP MLC Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Government had made the mistake of increasing the number of members in the Municipal Corporations and Zilla Parishads even before the census figures of 2021 were announced. That mistake has now been corrected. Now the increased number of members in Nagar Palikas and Nagar Panchayats should be reduced. “I have requested Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to make the number of members according to the population of 2011,” he added.
Speaking to the media, Bawankule said that the Shinde-Fadnavis Government has taken the right legal step by correcting the wrong decision of the Maha Vikas Aghadi Government on Wednesday. But in Nagar Palikas and Nagar Panchayats, the previous government had increased the number of members by omitting the population of 2011. Therefore, the increased number of members in Nagar Palikas and Nagar Panchayats should be reduced. The number of members should be according to the population of 2011. The basis of population for Zilla Parishads and Municipal Corporations has been taken as of 2011.
He said that he has requested the Chief Minister to hold the elections for the Municipal Corporations by keeping the same number of members. The Department of Urban Development and Rural Development cannot increase its membership without a new population. The MVA Government, by its own vote, showed a four and a half percent increase in population and increased the number of members. This was a big mistake. This mistake needed to be corrected. It was amended by the Shinde-Fadnavis Government. This is a legal decision. Elections will have to be held with OBC and other reservations as per old membership numbers. He explained that even if the election is delayed, there should be no wrong election.
MVA Govt stalled Vidarbha’s development:
“A statutory board was created to fill the development backlog of Vidarbha, Marathwada, rest of Maharashtra. The then Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stopped the development of Vidarbha by taking a stubborn stance on Vidarbha Statutory Development Board. He hastily tried to take a decision on this in a minority cabinet. The majority government has requested the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to immediately bring the matter of Vidarbha Statutory Development Board, Marathwada Statutory Development Board and the remaining Maharashtra Statutory Development Board to the Cabinet and the House for extension,” Bawankule said.
