Nagpur: A birthday party turned into a tragedy when an aged woman and her son were knocked dead by a speeding four-wheeler near Khapri on Wardha Road, late Sunday night. The vehicle involved in the accident sped away from the spot after the accident.
The deceased have been identified as Devkabai Mahadevrao Punjarwar (72), and her son Ganesh Mahadevrao Punjarwar (53), both residents of Plot No. 182, near Pagole Gym, Suyog Nagar, Ajni.
According to police, Devkabai and her family members had gone to Tandoor Restaurant on Wardha Road. As the restaurant was closed, the family parked the car there and walked up to Trupti Restaurant by crossing the road. They had gone to celebrate the birthday party of Sudha Sudhakar Gorshettiwar, who is mother-in-law of Devkabai’s daughter. After the party, at around 11 pm, the family members started crossing Wardha Road as their vehicle was parked at the opposite side of the restaurant. A speeding four-wheeler came from Wardha side and mowed down the walkers. Ganesh and Devkabai sustained grievous injuries in the mishap. They were rushed to a hospital by family members where they succumbed to their injuries.
Senior Police Inspector Chandrakant Yadav of Beltarodi Police Station said that the vehicle immediately sped away from the spot after the accident. The cops are searching for the vehicle on the basis of CCTV footage. A case under provisions of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act was registered by Beltarodi Police.
