Nagpur: With the start of the mega cricket festival — Indian Premier League (IPL), — Nagpur Police have pulled up their socks and ramped up their vigilance on bookie circles and online betting activity. As the IPL matches kick-started from March 26, the City Police have already activated their network of informers to give any tip-off about the gambling/betting activity.

According to reports, in Nagpur, as many as 12 cricket bookies were questioned and warned by DCP (Detection) Chinmay Pandit on Sunday. Similarly, the police conducted searches at offices of 20 notorious cricket bookies. Sources said that DCP Pandit warned the bookies of stern action if anyone found accepting bets on cricket matches.

Notably, a number of cricket bookies were found operating their illegal cricket betting rackets from Akola, Goa and Mumbai during the T20 World Cup 2021. More than 19 locations of history-sheeter cricket bookies were raided by the police last year. DCP Pandit said that the illegal business would not be allowed to flourish in Nagpur city. Such business will be dealt with an iron hand, he said.

According to another report, police have put their patrolling teams on high alert mode to trace any illegal gambling/betting rackets underway and keep a close eye on the activities of the known betting syndicates. Police have to largely depend on the network of informers and raid their premises in a bid to catch them red handed. Bookies usually operate from secluded, abandoned places, hotels, restaurants, rented out flats and other ‘dark’ places, sources added.
