Cracks have developed between layers of the runway which is proving disastrous for tires of the planes.

Runway of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is in a pitiable state over the years since it was built. It is a herculean task for pilots to make planes land and take off smoothly from this bumpy runway. The condition of the runway has not only been giving passengers a rough ride but has also posing danger to airplanes.
The runway is in need of immediate repair but the work has not yet been commenced as Mihan India Limited (MIL) failed to submit the required deposit amount.
As per the contract, the MIL is a 51 per cent stake holder in the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport and had to bear the cost of maintenance independently. sources informed that many pilots have also registered a complaint with authorities regarding the bumpy runway.
Cracks have developed between layers of the runway which is also proving disastrous for tires of the planes. The bumps on the runway can cause sudden bursting of tires or loosening of machinery within the planes.
Experts claimed that the condition of the runway in the past two years has worsened to such extent that runway recarpeting is the only solution left to solve the problem.
AAI airport controller Ashok Kumar Verma said that as such there is no maximum life of a runway and nor are there any yardsticks for having the runway recarpeted. Engineer keep an eye on the number of planes coming and leaving from the Nagpur airport and conduct regular inspection. To keep the operation of the airport running patch work is done on the runway on a continuous basis. He also confirmed that many pilots had made complaint to the AAI regarding the bad condition of runway and difficulty in smooth landing of planes.
Senior airport controller of the MIL Anil Kumar said that both AAI and the MIL have been devoted to improving the state of the runway. Cracks have developed between layers of the runway which is proving disastrous for tires of the planes
