Nagpur: Sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were in action, this time quite hectic one on Friday, as they were involved in a hot chase to catch an employee of a private firm involved in a bribery deal of Rs 15,000 in Nagpur.
The accused is an employee of M/s Genesis India Pvt Ltd, a firm contracted by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), was trapped while accepting the bribe for issuance of a positive report to an agency that was seeking work order form the Central Government unit. Sensing that his game got over, the accused ran away as CBI sleuths were busy with panchanama. However, CBI officials were not the one to give up and what happened next was something one sees in the movies, as the accused was sprinting and the cops were hot in chase. Finally after 30 minutes, CBI sleuths finally caught the accused.
The demand for bribes was made for filing a positive inspection report about Russian Electrotech in MIDC, Bhandara, to get a subsidy under a Union Government scheme. M/s Genesis India Pvt Ltd is tasked by KVIC with the crucial task of inspecting units applying for subsidies under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) and submitting comprehensive reports.
The accused have been identified as Gopi Jangir from M/s Genesis India Pvt Ltd, and Sahil Sudhir Thakur, also from the same firm. While Thakur was arrested by the CBI, Jangir is on the run.
According to the CBI, a complaint was filed by Pramod Patil, proprietor of M/s Russian Electrotech in MIDC, Bhandara, and a beneficiary of PMEGP through KVIC. Patil alleged that Gopi Jangir had not only threatened him with a negative inspection report but also with the recovery of previously received subsidies. The accused had demanded a bribe amounting to Rs 45,000.
Acting on Patil’s complaint lodged on January 2, CBI officials launched an investigation and set up a trap to capture the culprits. In a tactical move, Jangir delegated the task of receiving the bribe to Sahil Thakur. As Thakur accepted the cash from Patil in the Dighori area, CBI officials sprung into action, appearing at the scene to arrest him. Thakur attempted to evade arrest and initiated a 30-minute chase with CBI officials hot on his trail. Finally, the officials succeeded in apprehending Thakur with the bribe amount of Rs 15,000.
Meanwhile, Gopi Jangir, the prime accused, managed to evade capture, disappearing into the shadows after the CBI’s strategic trap was set. Authorities have now intensified efforts to locate and bring Jangir to justice. The CBI led by DIG Salim Khan has registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
