Nagpur News: Central Bank Mumbai knocked out Rahul Club from Nagpur in a penalty shootout on Tuesday in the All India Gold Cup Football Tournament.
Regulation time had ended with the scores levelled at 1-1 on the Kamptee Military Ground. In the all important shoot-out, the Nagpur team were on target twice while the visitors from Mumbai netted the ball thrice, to win the tiebreaker 3-2.
During the first 90 minutes of play, Vaibhav Shirley gave an early lead to Rahul Club with a 16th minute strike. As the match progressed, it appeared as if the score line will stay the same way till the final whistle, but it was not to be. An error committed by a Rahul Club player inside the box proved to be costly for his team as Central Bank were awarded a penalty by the referee for the foul. Sagar stepped up to successfully convert from the spot in the 62nd minute, and levelled the scores. After an entertaining period of play towards the closing stages of the match, the teams could not be separated and a cruel penalty shoot-out decided the fate of the game.
In another tie played earlier in the day, Garhwal Rifles from Uttarakhand handed out a 3-0 pasting to Ansar Club.
The team from the mountains struck thrice in the first 16 minutes of the game and closed down all the opportunities for the local team to come back into the match. Narendra, RajeshShree and Balbir registered their names on the score sheet for the Uttarahkand team with one goal apiece.
After the conclusion of the first round matches, the quarterfinals are scheduled to begin from Wednesday.
