Nagpur: Complementing the rapid infrastructure growth in Nagpur, the strategically located Orange City is all set to get a convenient and hassle-free alternative to traditional LPG cylinders. With the project of laying a gas pipeline from Mumbai to Nagpur along the Samruddhi Mahamarg on the verge of completion, consumers in many localities are expected to receive an uninterrupted supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) directly to their homes.
Consumers in many localities in the southern tip of the city like Chinchbhawan, Hingna and MIHAN will be getting piped CNG connections in the next three to four months. Over 25,000 consumers will be connected by the pipeline. In the following months, the network will be gradually expanded till Sitabuldi and within a span of eight years, it will cover the entire Nagpur.
Gas consumers in Sitabuldi and other nearby places are likely to get the connection by the end of 2026. While the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) is laying gas pipeline from Mumbai to Nagpur along the 700-km Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, HCG Nagpur Private Limited, a private player, has been developing a network for CNG distribution within the city.
More than 90 percent of work between Mumbai and Nagpur has been completed. HSG company has been authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to lay and operate a network for CNG distribution in the city. With an investment of Rs 1,000 crore, the company is laying a network of internal gas pipes throughout the city. HCG will receive the gas from GAIL and supply it through its own network of pipelines to domestic and commercial users. The CNG is a clean and safe fuel for cooking. It will also be a cheaper option as compared to liquified petroleum gas (LPG).
