Convict attempts suicide in Nagpur Central Jail Hospital

Nagpur: An inmate of Nagpur Central Jail attempted to suicide by setting his bed afire in the Jail Hospital, on Saturday evening. The inmate was identified as Shijo Chandrar Nadar, a resident of New Delhi.

According to police, Shijo is a notorious criminal having serious offences like firing, kidnapping, rape registered against him at various police stations. He was also booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). He was convicted for a crime and lodged in the jail. After he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, the jail administration kept him in a separate cell of the jail hospital.

On Saturday evening, he set the bed sheet on fire. The jail guards noticed Shijo trying to cover himself with the burning bed sheet. They immediately extinguished the fire. Staff of Dhantoli Police Station rushed to the spot after receiving the information. Health check up of Nadar was conducted at the jail hospital and his condition is reportedly normal. The police registered a case under Section 309 of Indian Penal Code against Nadar.

It may be mentioned here that Nadar had stopped a bus in Dhamna area of Hingna police station area in 2012 and opened fire at his girlfriend living who was a resident of Pachpaoli. Hingna police had arrested him at Mehbub Nagar in Andhra Pradesh. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 2019 while in prison. On July 7, 2019, he was admitted to the TB ward of the Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. On the morning of July 20, 2019, he escaped from the ward by jumping from the toilet window. The police conducted searches and arrested him. He was sent to jail.
