Nagpur: The country’s second exclusive medical device industrial park will come up at Mihan SEZ, Nagpur in Maharashtra. A proposal to this effect was recently discussed by two senior central ministers– Nitin Gadkari, MP from Nagpur and Union minister for road transport; and Hansraj Ganga Ram Ahir, minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers.
The government is serious about setting up the country’s second exclusive medical device industrial park at Mihan SEZ, said Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator, Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AIMED), after meeting with Nitin Gadkari in Delhi recently.
Nath and other representatives of AIMED met Nitin Gadkari to discuss the possibility of setting up of country’s second proposed exclusive medical device park. After being assured of huge import substitution potential of Rs.23,000 crore of imports and even greater potential of exports and preliminary viability, Gadkari asked AIMED to work out the details and other modalities of this project on priority basis. Gadkari assured all support to make the project a super success and also requested AIMED to submit a note of what’s needed as a national policy to boost domestic manufacturing of medical devices, added Nath.
The country’s first medical device park is coming up at Andhra Pradesh, also a result of the initiative of AIMED. Nath has suggested allocation of 200 acres within Mihan SEZ or adjoining it and customizing the facilities to attract a cluster of industries around a common manufacturing facilitation centre with ETO and Gamma radiation sterilization facility, a high technology machining centre and common tool room, common testing facilities to attract core medical devices possibly other than electronics as the one coming up at Andhra is already being designed to provide special competitive advantage and facilities to electronic medical device manufacturing.
“We are extremely happy with this development and the wholesome desire of the government to set up country’s second proposed exclusive medical device park. Gadkari’s initiative and encouragement is commendable and we all believe that Nagpur is an excellent location for this park to come up as it has all ingredients to make it a world class, internationally competitive manufacturing centre,” said Rajiv Nath.
An AIMED delegation would soon be visiting Mihan SEZ to get a first hand stock of location and draw plans for early implementation of government’s plan.
