Nagpur: Vaccination of children in the 12-14 years age group against Covid-19 started in the country on Wednesday with Corbevax vaccine, amid a steady dip in coronavirus cases. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will kick-start the vaccination drive at 17 designated centres across the 10 zones from Thursday. The Nagpur district has received around 51,000 Corbevax doses from the State Public Health Department on Wednesday. Of these, the NMC has got around 31,000 as it has a large number of estimated beneficiaries.

The drive shall begin simultaneously at all these centres at 11 am. Those born between January 1, 2008 and March 17, 2010, are eligible under the Corbevax drive. Beneficiaries older than this period can go for Covaxin up to 18 years of age.

According to officials, GMCH and IGGMCH are not part of the drive for this age group. GMCH is already running Covaxin drive and hence requested to exclude its vaccination centre for the 12-14 group. IGGMCH has cited a shortage of manpower for the drive. Mihan-based AIIMS is among the 17 centres which would be offering the doses. The second dose would be due after 28 days.

As Board exams for HSC and SSC students are on, the NMC is not holding the drive in any schools. The drive can be held in schools following formal requests from their management or the Education Board. Officials also added that the district has not received any specific target for this group. The Central Government is yet to issue a letter to the state which in turn would forward it to us for the target population.

The beneficiaries need to carry their identity and age proof to get the vaccination. The sessions can be planned online while walk-in registration is also allowed, officials said. So far, no private hospital has expressed interest in holding paid drive following the failure of vaccination for other age groups.
