Nagpur: In a ghastly mishap, a crane crushed a pedestrian to death in Rana Pratap Nagar area on Sunday evening. The driver fled the spot fearing public wrath.
Identified as Mansingh Sakharam Waghade (56), the deceased was a resident of Ekatmata Nagar Slums, Jaitala Road. According to the police, Waghade was a street drummer. He used to visit shop-to-shop playing a drum and collecting alms to make both ends meet. Around 6 pm, he was going towards Mangalmurti Square on Pratap Nagar Ring Road. Suddenly, a rashly-driven crane (MH-40/BJ-1959) hit Waghade in front of Shreenath Farsan. He fell down and was run over by the crane.
Fearing public violence, the crane driver fled the spot. Waghade was rushed to Government Medical College & Hospital. After examining Waghade, doctors declared him dead. After recording the statement of Shishupal (34), son of the deceased, Rana Pratap Nagar Police registered a case under Sections 304(A), 279 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 134, 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act and launched a search for the crane driver.
