Nagpur: In a distressing turn of events, an employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) found himself ensnared by cyber criminals, resulting in a loss of Rs 27 lakh through fraudulent stock market investments.
Yashodhara Nagar Police have initiated legal action against the accused individuals identified as Aryan Reddy, Pooja, and group admin Jiya Shankar, following a complaint lodged by Nilesh Devnath Khapare, a 35-year-old resident of Vinoba Bhave Nagar.
Nilesh, currently based in Mumbai, encountered the scam while in Nagpur on January 11, stumbling upon an enticing advertisement on Instagram promising substantial returns of 5 to 10 per cent on investments in the stock market.
Upon joining the group facilitated by Jiya, Nilesh was provided with login credentials and soon succumbed to the deception, transferring a total of Rs 26.85 lakh to the designated account as instructed. However, the promised profits failed to materialize, leaving Nilesh unable to recover his initial investment. Subsequently, he reported the fraudulent scheme to the authorities.
Yashodhara Nagar Police have taken swift action, registering an offense under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act against the perpetrators, highlighting the ever-present threat of cybercrime and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding against such deceitful practices.
