Nagpur: The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Detection) Chinmay Pandit said that many youths were found addicted to drugs. In some cases, youths were found indulging in even drug smuggling. Therefore, citizens should join hands with the police to curb the drug menace.

The DCP was speaking at a ‘Web discussion’ programme on ‘Social Participation in Drug Eradication and Preventive Action’ organised by the District Information Office. “The police are taking all possible measures in curbing drug menace. State and district level committees have been constituted for the purpose. The committees have representatives from police, revenue, forest, border security force, post department and food and drug departments,” the police officer added.

On other efforts taken to help youths stay away from drug addiction, he said, police have initiated action for consumption and transportation of drugs. The need is to create awareness among the public about contraband. On drug-smuggling, the DCP Pandit said, the police observed that the drugs were being trafficked through the post. Therefore, the responsibility of the postal department is important. Even school-going children were found consuming drugs. Therefore, parents also need to be vigilant and be counselled, he added.

The NDPS Act has been enacted as a solution to control the drug menace. Under the law, a person can be punished for 1 to 10 years, he said. The District Collector R Vimala also participated in the web discussion and raised questions about availability of drugs in the city. About 800 cases have been registered in Nagpur city and the police are keeping a close watch on the places. The programme was conducted by District Information Officer Praveen Takey.
