Nagpur: In a bizarre incident, a 27-year-old man from Nagpur, Pranav Kanhere, concocted a false story about being robbed by chain snatchers to deceive both his family and the police, as revealed by an investigation conducted by the Nagpur Police Crime Branch.

In reality, Kanhere had mortgaged his gold chain to a bullion trader to pay off loans he had accumulated. The truth was exposed through a meticulous inquiry that revealed the alleged robbery was nothing but a figment of his imagination, according to a report in a local daily.

Kanhere, a resident of Bhavsar Square and engaged in the furniture business, found himself burdened by substantial debts owed to multiple creditors. Desperate to find a solution, he pledged his gold chain with a local bullion trader and secured Rs 90,000 to alleviate some of his financial obligations. However, when he returned home without the gold chain, his family began questioning its whereabouts. In response, Kanhere fabricated a story, claiming that he had been robbed by two bike-borne assailants in the Ganeshpeth area.

Alarmed by the alleged incident, his family accompanied him to the Ganeshpeth police station, where a formal complaint was lodged. Kanhere told the police that two individuals had snatched his gold chain while speeding away on a motorcycle.

The Crime Branch initiated a parallel investigation into the case and reviewed CCTV footage from the area where the alleged crime took place. Surprisingly, the footage showed no evidence of the incident. This discrepancy raised suspicions, prompting investigators to dig deeper.

When questioned further, Kanhere struggled to provide consistent details about the robbers and their motorcycle, further raising suspicions. His exact statement that the stolen gold chain weighed 12.5 grams particularly caught the investigators’ attention, casting more doubt on his story.

Under pressure from the police, Kanhere eventually confessed that he had fabricated the entire robbery story to avoid confronting his family about mortgaging the gold chain. The Crime Branch handed Kanhere over to the Ganeshpeth police for further proceedings.

Police Inspector Machhindra Pandit of Ganeshpeth police station is overseeing the case. Investigating officer PSI Malhari Doifode stated that Kanhere has not been arrested, as he was the complainant. “Since the complainant has filed a false report, we will submit the case details to the court, which will determine the next course of action,” PSI Doifode explained.

Kanhere’s family members were reportedly shocked upon learning that the chain-snatching incident was entirely fabricated.
