The ambitious Nagpur Metro Project received a major boost as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) removed 34 central streetlight poles from Khapri Flyover to Hotel Pride on Wardha Road in the direction of Sitabuldi, thus making a way for commencement of construction activity of the Project there. The next phase of the Project will be to start with construction of viaduct for Metrorail on the median verge of the road from Airport to Sitabuldi.

NMC is assisting Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) in the shifting of the electric poles from the road divider thus removing one of the major hindrances from the path of the Metrorail development. NMC has today removed 18 electric poles on Hotel Pride side and 16 from the Airport side.

Soon to be ‘Smart City’, Nagpur is fast gearing up to join the bandwagon of the towns having the rapid public transport system of the Metrorail. The new elevated Metro Rail Project by Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) has the eyes of the nation for its proposed design and architecture.

NMRCL along with NHAI has proposed an incredible design, which includes a 4 storey building over the new Wardha Road Flyover which leads to the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur. The design shows the ambition and scope of the modern transit system. For the first time in India, three stations on the 3.41 km stretch of the Wardha Road will be erected on the central pillars rising up from in between the two ways of the flyover. This will give the project its exceptional strength required to withstand the passage on the first level, ticketing window on the second level, shops, cafeteria and restaurants on the third level and the Metrorail corridor on the fourth level. A similar design will be incorporated at the crowded Ramjhula and crammed railway line at Loha pul.

Another marvelous blueprint involves the intersection of the two Metrorail corridors at the Munje Square near Sitabuldi which will house a 26m high iconic tower. This will be the tallest structure of the project and will comprise of some commercial space, office space, shopping complex as well as row of eateries and coffee shops. The aim is to let people come from different areas and meet at a common place for food and entertainment while enjoying some leisure time.

Airports authority of India (AAI) has granted NOC to the metro rail alignment near the proposed New Airport. The NOC was critical for construction of metro rail elevated corridor near CONCOR siding and Khapri railway station. The metro rail alignment is at grade in MIHAN area except for a stretch of about 800 metres which is elevated due to presence of CONCOR Siding and Khapri railway station approaches. This area being in the safety zone of the proposed new airport required clearance from the Airport Authorities. The work for at-grade section in MIHAN will gain momentum with this NOC. The construction of boundary wall is already in progress.

The Nagpur Metrorail Project under the leadership of Mr. Brijesh Dixit aims to target 3.5 Lakh passengers per day, thereby greatly reducing dependence on the private vehicles.
