In the midst of the currency ban that’s taken over the country, people of the Internet have found a way to keep calm and carry on. We use the term ‘calm’ in its loosest sense. It involves someone named Sonam Gupta, whose alleged ‘bewafai’ (unfaithfulness) is sending Twitter into a meltdown.

We don’t know who Sonam Gupta is or if she exists for real. But here’s how this viral story began.

A while ago, a picture of an old, worn out Rs. 10 note made its way online. It stood out because someone had written the words ‘Sonam Gupta bewafa hai’ in Hindi on it. Now, months (and a ban on Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes) later, the same words have made a comeback.

Written on a brand new Rs. 2000 note were these words – ‘Sonam Gupta bewafa hai’. Guess hell hath no fury like woman or man scorned.

And thus, Twitter found itself a muse. ‘Sonam Gupta’ became a trending topic because tweeple really had a lot to say about this woman they didn’t even know.

We feel you, Sonam Gupta, whoever you are, wherever you are.
