Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra witnessed a tragic turn of events as a dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) ended his life inside the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) strong room in Kalamna area of Nagpur. The deceased, identified as Ramchandra Nanaji Rohankar (54), allegedly consumed poison late Tuesday night, unable to cope with the distress of losing his job.
Rohankar, a resident of Anjani Society, Pipla Phata, Hudkeshwar, had been serving in the city police force until a controversial altercation led to his downfall. According to police sources, Rohankar and Head Constable Bhushan Ramchandra Balkhode were embroiled in a drunken brawl at Nimje Saoji Bhojanalaya near Pipla Phata last year. The argument escalated into a physical assault on the restaurant owner, drawing the attention of locals. A bystander recorded the incident, and as the video went viral on social media, swift action followed.
Taking cognizance of the misconduct, Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal suspended both officers. Though reinstated recently and posted at the EVM strong room in Kalamna, their troubles were far from over. Just last week, dismissal notices were served to the duo, a decision that reportedly pushed Rohankar into severe depression.
Late Tuesday night, the distressed ASI consumed poison while on duty. Before collapsing, he managed to alert his family, triggering a frantic rescue effort. Kalamna Police and relatives rushed him to a hospital, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed on Wednesday morning.
Authorities have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation. Meanwhile, Rohankar’s grieving family has alleged that the dismissal notice took a heavy emotional toll on him. He leaves behind a wife, a son preparing for police recruitment, and a daughter pursuing an engineering degree.
The incident has raised serious questions about the psychological impact of sudden job terminations within the force. Did the system fail Rohankar, or was this tragedy preventable? The investigation continues.
