Nagpur.
The mushrooming of unscrupulous quacks or bogus doctors going out-of-proportion, the District Administration has decided to put its foot down and eliminate the menace with heavy hand. A special drive against the bogus doctors will be launched soon in the district. A special squad for the purpose will be formed by the end this month, said Additional District Collector Panjabrao Wankhede at a meeting held on Monday (March 9).
The meeting Anti-Bogus Medical Practitioners Committee was held at the office of District Collector and was presided over by Wankhede. Others who attended the meeting include officials of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Regional Transport Office, Zilla Parishad’s Health Department and Gajanan Pande of Consumers’ Forum.
The Additional District Collector further said that Coordination Committees at Taluka-level will be formed to provide powerful teeth to the special drive against the bogus doctors who play with the lives of gullible people. In Nagpur City, the drive will be waged by Nagpur Municipal Corporation, stated Wankhede.
Now-a-days, the newspapers are flooded with deceitful advertisements that mislead people on treating and curing various diseases. The special squad will monitor and scrutinize such advertisements. Legal advice would be solicited for cracking down on the wrongful advertisers. Wankhede urged the Committee members to remain present at tri-monthly meetings personally and not send their representatives in order to effectively curb the spread of bogus doctors.
Action must be initiated against the persons who are not doctors but are creating havoc by misleading the public. Hundreds of people die because of misdiagnosis at the hands of quacks claiming themselves to be “doctors” as health authorities shy away from properly doing their jobs. Profiting from the sale of spurious drugs and fake doctors’ befooling, harming or even killing innocent people is equivalent to “murder”.
