Divyang woman, kin duped of Rs 45 lakh in Nagpur

Nagpur: Kapil Nagar police in Nagpur booked eight people on the charges of cheating a Divyang woman and her relatives to the tune of Rs 45 lakh. The accused, who posed themselves as HDFC Bank officials, have been charged with cheating, forgery and fraud between April 2017 and May this year following the complaint by 48-year-old physically challenged Maya Shambharkar.

The accused have been identified as Navneet Kailash Gajbhiye (35), his sister Priyadarshani (38), both residents of Bank Colony, near NIT Garden, Kapil Nagar; Chaitanya Pritam Maudekar (28), a resident of Ishwar Nagar; Hitesh Gajbhiye (34) and Nari alias Mahesh Ganveer (32) and three others. The complaint was filed by Maya Haridas Shabharkar (48), a resident of House No. 33, Rajgrih Nagar, Nari Road.

The complaint was filed by Maya Haridas Shabharkar (48), a resident of House No. 33, Rajgrih Nagar, Nari Road. According to police, the accused persons impersonated themselves as officials of HDFC bank and promised higher rates of interest under a scheme. Maya is handicapped and her father recently retired from a government job. A total of Rs 45 lakh were collected by the accused from Maya and her relatives and issued bogus bank receipts.

According to the complaint, lured by the promise of higher returns, Maya and her family members handed over Rs 45 lakh to the accused who did not provide the high returns on investment nor the principal amount was returned. Apart from Navneet and Priyadarshini, Moundekar, Hitesh and Ganvir and three others too had joined in the fraudulent activities, said the complaint.

Police said in the past, Moundekar was also booked for sending fake ‘CBI officer’ at the residence of Maya threatening to implicate her brother in an accident case.

A case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 34 of Indian Penal Code was registered by Kapil Nagar police against the accused. Further probe is underway.
