Diwali alert: FDA seizes suspected adulterated food worth Rs 20 lakh in Nagpur

Nagpur: Acting on a tip off, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized suspected adulterated food worth Rs 20 lakh in a major operation in Nagpur. Diwali is just a few days away and the demand for food items is at its peak. The crooked traders indulge in a lot of adulteration in food items to earn illegal money. In this context, the FDA initiated the operation and seized the suspected adulterated food, according to a report in local Marathi daily.

According to the report, the Food and Drug Administration has seized 10,800 kg of food worth Rs 20 lakh in Nagpur on suspicion of adulteration. The seized things include food, edible oil, ghee, vegetable oil, semolina, and salt. Under a special campaign, the FDA has raided 16 places and taken this action. The seized samples have been sent for analysis. On the eve of Diwali, the Food and Drug Administration took action against persons that violated the Food Safety Act.

Suspected adulterated ghee worth Rs 3 lakh was also seized in Mumbai on Wednesday. According to the information received by the Vigilance Department of the FDA in Mumbai on October 18, this action was taken against Rishabh Shuddh Tup Bhandar godown at Masjid Bandar. 400 kg of ghee worth Rs 3 lakh was seized from the godown.

Samples of the seized ghee have been sent for analysis and further necessary action will be taken based on the report. While this incident is fresh, a large amount of adulterated food items have been seized from Nagpur as well.
