Nagpur: Additional Sessions Judge N H Jadhav in Nagpur on Wednesday sentenced 42-year-old Kuwarlal Bharat Barmayya to life imprisonment for the brutal murders of his wife Kiran and her paramour Shiva alias Shivkumar Shriram Kaushale. The double murders that took place in the Ajni area on July 27, 2020 had rocked the city.
According to the prosecution, Kuwarlal and Kiran (40), both labourers, lived in a rented house at Plot No. 51-B, Kalyaneshwar Nagar, near Shiv Mandir, on Manewada-Besa Road. Kiran was Kuwarlal’s second wife, and they had moved to Nagpur for better job opportunities. Shiva (27), a resident of Kiran’s native village Bakoda, tehsil Lalbarra, district Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, accompanied her to the city on July 6, 2020.
Shiva soon started visiting Kiran’s house frequently, and the two began an extramarital affair. In the early hours of July 27, 2020, Kuwarlal caught Kiran and Shiva in a compromising position on their balcony. Enraged, he grabbed an axe and attacked the couple, delivering several fatal blows that killed them on the spot. Neighbours who heard the commotion alerted the police.
A team from Ajni Police Station, led by Senior Inspector Pradeep Rayannawar, quickly arrived at the scene. They arrested Kuwarlal and sent the bodies to Government Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem. The police investigation revealed that Kuwarlal had a history of violence, having previously been involved in the murder of his cousin. After serving time in jail for that crime, he was released, only to commit this double murder.
Inspector Rayannawar filed a chargesheet against Kuwarlal under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. During the trial, the court examined several witnesses who testified to the events leading to the double murders. With the charges proven, Judge Jadhav sentenced Kuwarlal to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000.
Additional Public Prosecutor Adv Madhuri Motghare represented the State, while Adv Roshni Sherekar served as the defence counsel.
