Drug dealer gets 12-year jail for smuggling 69 kg ganja in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Special Judge for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Nagpur, Pramod M Nagalkar, on Thursday, sentenced Aas Mohammad Shakur, a drug dealer, to 12 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs 1 lakh after the charges of peddling more than 69 kilogramme marijuana valued at Rs 6.95 lakh were proved against him in the court.

The prosecution’s story is that Butibori Police got a tip off from the network of the informants that Aas Mohammad Shakur (29), a native of Ward No 18, Midhanpur, district Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, was carrying a huge consignment of marijuana in a Toyota Corolla Altis car (DL-07/CG-4341) from Chandrapur district and would pass via Nagpur on July 3, 2021.

As per the instructions of the senior officials, police set up a ‘Nakabandi’ at the toll post near Borkhedi (Railway) and intercepted the car. During the vehicle search, police found more than 69 kilogramme marijuana in 35 boxes. Cops seized the contraband, the car, some cash and a cell phone collectively valued at Rs 12.06 lakh and took Aas Mohammad into custody.

Butibori Police registered a case under Sections 20 and 22 of the NDPS Act and arrested him. Assistant Police Inspector Satish Sontakke investigated the case under the supervision of Senior Inspector Omprakash Sontakke, PSO (Butibori) and filed a chargesheet against the accused. During the trial, the Special Court examined 10 prosecution witnesses.

As the charges were substantiated against Aas Mohammad, the court awarded him 12 years RI with a fine of Rs one lakh for the offences under Sections 20(c), read with Section 8(c) of the NDPS Act. If Aas Mohammad failed to pay the fine, he would undergo additional one year RI. The court ordered that the seized Toyota Corolla Altis car (DL07/CG-4341) lying at the police station be disposed of as per rules and law as none claimed its ownership.
