Nagpur: In a strategic move with the eyes on coming local body elections, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) undertook an exercise to name the new office-bearers of the committee. The new executive shows the Congress party gave weightage to new blood specifically while selecting names from Nagpur, the fortress of RSS. The list also showed a name for the post of Secretary. This man had never won the election of even a corporator. The MPCC move raised many eyebrows.

However, the most talking point among Congress circles in the city is the dumping of some known faces like Satish Chaturvedi, Rajendra Mulak, Pratap Tate, Gajju Yadav, Abhijit Wanjari among others. The Congress high command seems to have doubted these leaders’ capabilities or capacities for sidelining them. Or these leaders lacked ‘godfathers.’ Or the party leadership has some other plan to vest some other responsibilites to these ‘sidelined’ leaders such as Rajendra Mulak becoming President of Nagpur District Congress Committee etc etc.

The day Ashok Chavan took the reins as MPCC President, he is following the ‘advise’ of his old colleagues and acting accordingly. In Nagpur, the ‘advise’ of Anant Gharad is paramount for the MPCC chief. At the same time, the MPCC President, in a calculated move, distanced himself from Sunil Kedar, who is the only Congress MLA in Nagpur District. On the other hand, the most “inactive” State Youth Congress President Vishwajit Kadam has become his shadow. Sources said that Kadam visits city slyly and avoids the workers. As a result, Sameer Meghe left the party and joined BJP and become an MLA, too. On the other hand, Kadam “bought” the ticket for Lok Sabha election and licked the dusts.

However, all said and done, the MPCC move to enthuse new blood in the executive is being appreciated. This is the first time the MPCC is with an army of youths included in it. The newly named executive clearly shows that the clout of Mukul Wasnik is still working. The command of the state unit, as usual, will be with ‘Permanent’ General Secretary Ganesh Patil and Treasurer will be Suresh Shetty, both confidants of Wasnik. Moreover, other names included from Buldana and Nagpur districts such as Nana Gawande, Mujeeb Pathan, Praful Gudhade Patil, Sanjay Rathod show the stamp of Wasnik. But one more talking point is the demotion of Nana Gawande as Secretary and his juniors Suresh Bhoyar, Munna Ojha, Praful Gudhade Patil as General Secretaries. Most surprising aspect pertains to the sidelining of Deepak Katole, the closest aide of Wasnik, and who was finding place in every MPCC executive.

The new executive has one mission at hand: Victory for Congress party in the coming municipal elections in Mumbai and Nagpur.
