Nagpur: Cyber crooks tricked a 73- year-old ex-serviceman into downloading an App on his smart phone and siphoned off Rs 6 lakh from his bank account.
The victim, Ramesh Keshav Boradkar, a resident of Leverage Greens Apartment, Plot No. 38/D, Koradi Road, was earlier in the Indian Army. He then joined the State Bank of India (SBI) at Raipur, Chhattisgarh, from where he retired. On April 14, he was browsing on the Internet to get more details about the sick medical allowance given to ex-Army personnel. He Googled and found a mobile number 8102029010.
When he contacted the cell number, he did not get any response. After some time, he received a call from the same number. Identifying himself as an officer from the office of the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (PCDA), Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, he asked Boradkar to download an App and fill in all details, including his personal information, after clicking the link.
Accordingly, the ex-Armyman sent all the information and also shared the One Time Password (OTP) received by him. Soon, the cyber crooks siphoned off Rs 6 lakh from his SBI account.
Following a complaint lodged by Boradkar, Koradi Police registered a case under Sections 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 66(c), 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, and started investigation.
