Karanja:- The Public Interaction Programme (PIP) on “Local Groundwater Issues & Management,” was held at Narayanrao Kale Smruti Model College in Karanja (Ghadge), in collaboration with the department of chemistry.
Dr Ravindra Sontakke, officiating principal, presided over the function while Mr. N. Varadaraj, Regional Director, CGWB, Central Region, Nagpur, was the keynote speaker. Smt. Pragati Jagtap, Assistant BDO, Karanja Gh., Kalyan Jatav, Executive Engineer, Division VI, CGWB, Nagpur, Dr. Versha Mane, Senior Geologist, GSDA, Wardha, Ms. Sayelli Tembhurne, Scientist-C, CGWB, and Mr. Nirmal Kumar Nanda, Scientist-C, CGWB were present on the dais.
In his address, N Varadaraj emphasized the critical importance of understanding and managing local groundwater resources. He highlighted the current challenges faced due to over-extraction and contamination of groundwater. Varadaraj stressed the need for sustainable practices and community involvement in groundwater management to ensure the availability of this vital resource for future generations.
As the Chief Guest, Smt. Pragati Jagtap spoke about the government’s initiatives in groundwater conservation and the role of local governance in implementing these measures. She encouraged the community to actively participate in groundwater management programs and to adopt water-saving techniques in their daily lives, highlighting successful case studies of groundwater management from other regions as models to be emulated.
Mr Kalyan Jatav, Dr. Varsha Mane, Ms. Sayelli Tembhurne and Nirmal Kumar Nanda delivered informative presentations on the geological aspects of groundwater in the region and explained the process of aquifer mapping and its significance in identifying potential groundwater sources. They shared various groundwater recharge techniques and their applicability in different geological settings, and encouraged the adoption of rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge methods to enhance groundwater availability.
They shared success stories of community-led initiatives in groundwater conservation from different parts of the country.
In their presentation, they discussed the various policies and regulations related to groundwater management and talked about the role of scientific research in developing innovative solutions for groundwater issues.
In the concluding remark Dr Ravindra welcomed the participants and expressed gratitude to the CGWB for organizing the event in collaboration with the department of chemistry. He spoke on the importance of educational institutions in spreading awareness about groundwater conservation. He urged the students to take the knowledge gained from the program and apply it within their communities to make a tangible impact.
The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from teachers and the students of Narayanrao Smruti Model College. The students actively engaged in the discussions and expressed their willingness to contribute to groundwater conservation efforts.
The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by Nirmal Kumar Nanda. Dr Gaurav Pethe, Dr Ulhas Rathod , IQAC coordinator Umesh Meshram and other teachers strove hard to make the program successful.
