Nagpur: Posing as Mumbai-based officers of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), two fraudsters duped a 75-year-old man of Rs 2.75 lakh for not issuing an arrest warrant against him in a ‘criminal case.’

The victim, Vinod Ramdas Ganvir, a resident of Plot No 304, Dhantoli, near Sure-Tech Hospital, received a call from cell number 6776413665 on February 14. Identifying himself as a CBI officer, the caller asked Ganvir as to how his Aadhaar Card and debit card of Canara Bank were with Naresh Goyal against whom a case of cheating was registered. The caller then told Ganvir that he was made an accused in the case and an arrest warrant would soon be issued against him. He then asked Ganvir to speak to his senior officer who demanded Rs 2 lakh from him to cancel the warrant.

Fearing unnecessary trouble in such matters, Ganvir deposited Rs 2 lakh through RTGS in the bank account number given to him. Again he received the calls demanding 75,000 more to hush-up the case completely. Ganvir then also transferred the money online in their account.

Later, the septuagenarian realised that he was tricked into giving money and approached the police. Following Ganvir’s complaint, Dhantoli Police registered a case under Sections 419, 420, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, and started investigation.
