Nagpur: Posing as an officer of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), a cyber crook duped a middle-aged woman of more than Rs 2.85 lakh on the pretext of collecting outstanding power bills online.
The victim, Vandana Lalit Mundada (51), a resident of Parijat Heights-7, Plot No 301, Gandhi Nagar, received a text message on her mobile phone that the electric connection to her house would be snapped for non-payment of outstanding bills on July 6. As she did not receive the bill for the month of May 2022, she contacted the cell number 09339125067 mentioned in the message.
The person on the other end claimed himself to be an officer of MSEDCL and asked her to download an application for paying the outstanding bill. He told her that she would get the bills regularly after downloading the AnyDesk App. After Vandana downloaded it, the screen of the cell phone got shared with him and Rs 2,85,559 were debited from her account. Realising that she was duped, Vandana lodged a complaint with Ambazari Police who later registered a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 66(d) of Information Technology Act, and started the probe.
