Nagpur: A group of nearly 300 farmers have moved the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court against Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), seeking higher compensation for laying a gas pipeline through their land.
GAIL is laying a gas pipeline from Mumbai to Nagpur along the Samruddhi Mahamarg taking it further to Jharsuguda in Odisha. The pipeline passes through private land on this route.
Apart from seeking higher compensation, the petition also says that taking over of land by GAIL also violates their right of property provided in the constitution.
The farmers from Bhandara whose lands come under the Nagpur to Jharsuguda route have filed a petition in the High Court.
The petitioners contend that the compensation offered at present under the Petroleum and Minerals Pipeline Act of 1962 is too meagre. They have sought payout under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013.
The court has issued notices to the respondents which include GAIL and Union of India.
