Nagpur: Even though the Second Capital of Maharashtra saw zero murders in February, Nagpur witnessed 70 road accidents, including 25 fatal ones, which claimed 26 lives across in the month. Overall, in the first two months of 2022, 163 accidents occurred, including 57 fatal and 65 serious ones. During the same period last year, the city had witnessed 177 accidents — 43 fatal and 68 serious, according to reports.

Analysis of road accidents in January and February by Traffic Police revealed that 28 incidents were caused due to speeding, dangerous driving (32), wrong-side driving (8) and over 90 due to other causes like bad roads, negligent driving, mechanical fault in vehicles etc. The study further revealed that most accidents occurred between 9 pm and 7 am, when the traffic is thin. Of the 164 accidents reported in these two months, 42 occurred between 9 pm and 7am.

Traffic policing crumbled:

The accident data for February indicates that traffic policing on city roads had crumbled. In February, of the 70 accidents reported, only 14 took place from 9 pm to 7 am, while 18 between 1 pm and 5 pm. This further indicates the need for improvement in traffic policing.

According to traffic experts, behaviour of motorists on city roads has worsened. They stressed on the need for the Nagpur City Traffic Police to adopt zero tolerance toward traffic rules violators. Unlike murders, traffic police can curtail road accidents by intensifying drive across the city, they said.

A member of the MP Road Safety Committee put the blame for the rise in fatal accidents on poor traffic policing. “About 90% accidents occur due to human errors, while 10% due to faulty road designs,” he said, adding cops should be seen more on roads than in office.

Reports further said that the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar admitted a rise in the number of road accidents and said several measures are being taken to curtail road mishaps, but we are not getting the desired results.

Data revealed that night hours prove to be accident-prone due to rash and overspeeding by heavy vehicles, which are responsible for most such incidents. Besides helmetless two-wheeler riders, rash and negligent driving too are the other main causes.
