Nagpur: For the harassed Nagpurians, the partial opening of the new bridge at Ramdaspeth in Nagpur will provide a much-needed breather from regular traffic-jams in the area. The first vehicle rolled off from the bridge near Buty Hall on Thursday evening after Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials took stock of the construction work. The bridge had been closed for around two years after a portion of it washed away due to flooding in Nag River.
Commuters were happy to see the reopening of the bridge, a crucial connect between West and East Nagpur. As only one side of the bridge is completed, NMC has allowed only two-wheelers and three-wheelers’ movement on the bridge to avoid congestion.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Lahane, Chief Engineer Rajiv Gaikwad, Executive Engineer (Dharampeth Zone) Vijay Gurubaxani inspected the new bridge. A total of 43 girders have been cast at the site of which 26 have been placed, while work on other girders is on. The bridge is crucial for smooth connectivity and easing congestion in the mid section of the city.
The total cost of the project is Rs 8 crore. Officials said work on the second part of the bridge would be completed by March end. Slab work is on, after which approaches and tarring would be done. Construction of retaining wall also is in full swing.
