Fire Alert: “Provide 1 crore for Mayo Hospital,” HC direct Nagpur Collector

Nagpur: In a significant decision, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court has directed the District Collector to provide Rs One Crore to the Executive Engineer of PWD (Electrical) to start the work of installation of fire safety mechanism at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) commonly known as or Mayo Hospital.

The division bench of Justice Sunil Shukre and Justice Vrushali Joshi issued the order while hearing suo-motu PIL No 4 of 2020, PIL No 10 of 2023 and PIL No 25 of 2020.

Adv S P Bhandarkar, amicus curiae along with Addl Government Pleader (AGP) submitted in the court that substantial amount of funds collected from and out of the CSR funds of various Companies and Corporations is lying in balance and therefore, a portion of it can be spent for taking forward the cause of the patients in Vidarbha Region.

Amicus curiae Adv Bhandarkar further submitted that installation of fire safety mechanism at IGGMCH is pending since long and if the fire safety measures are taken immediately, it would serve the cause of the patients and also would amount to making compliance with various orders passed by this Court in the other connected matter.
