trees, grass reduced to ashes
Nagpur: Like every summer, this year also a fire broke out in Ambazari Biodiversity Park in about 20 hectares of area that gutted precious trees and grass on Sunday evening. Workers of adjoining Madhav Netralaya burnt medical waste materials and garbage and the flames entered the park around 4.30 pm, informed Ashish Ninawe, Range Forest Officer, Ambazari, in a press release.
As a precautionary measure, field staff members of Forest Department tried to extinguish the fire with the help of air blowers. Meanwhile, forest officials contacted fire and emergency services seeking help. Three fire tenders reached the spot immediately and doused the fire by 7.30 pm. The officials could not tell about exact damages caused in the park as they were busy in extinguishing the fire in poor light.
In 2020, after a short circuit at one of the feeders at Shankar Nagar tower line of MSEDCL, a fire broke out in the Park that gutted grass and dried leaves spread in nine hectares of land.
Similarly, in 2021 also, a major fire broke out at the Park, reducing grass and trees to ashes in 50 hectares area. The fire broke out at the back side of the RTM Nagpur University administrative building. The 750 hectares biodiversity park is maintained by Joint Forest Management Committee ( JFMC). This park is providing a chance for nature trail to people of Nagpur in the city limits.
